Fedor vs. Arlovski Bout Scrapped

5 oz. of Pain is reporting that they have received word that the proposed Affliction bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski is being scrapped due to a lingering hand injury Emelianenko has been dealing with. It has also been reported recently that Fedor's name was removed from the promotion area on the Thomas and Mack Center's website.

As a replacement main event, Affliction is now said to be negotiating with Josh Barnett to take on Arlovski. This may work out to be for the better as many people couldn't agree which of the two was more deserving of a title shot. Now we could get a number 1 contender's match followed by a title shot at the third Affliction event.

Roger Huerta Speaks Out Against the UFC

The following is an excerpt from the current issue of FIGHT!, which is available on newsstands now:

Huerta is one of a growing number of Zuffa-contracted fighter who feel that there is a disconnection between the company’s success and the way fighters are compensated. Huerta’s disillusionment with the UFC began when he did press tours for his employer in Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, and London and received a $50 per diem for his troubles. It sounds like a a good deal until you factor in time away from training, friends, and family, days often stretch twelve hours or more, and an exchange rate of one UK pound for two American dollars. “Why do you think I don’t do PR for the UFC any more?” he asks.
He’s also unhappy with the terms of his current contract, but to Huerta, the press tours underscore a larger point: by and the large, Zuffa does not treat its contracted fighters with sufficient loyalty or respect. He argues that many UFC fighters barely make enough to cover their training expenses. He brings up teammate Keith Jardine repeatedly, incensed that a main event fighter is working for ten and ten- $10k to show and 10k to win - while his opponent regularly makes ten times as much.
Huerta’s expression hardens and becomes more animated as talk turns to endorsements. The common counter-argument for complaints about fighter pay is that fighters often make more from endorsements and sponsorships than they do for competing. But Huerta has soured on the system after receiving lowball offers from companies who expect fighters to jump at the chance to endorse products. He rails against a Fortune 500 company for offering a deal to build him as a spokesman that included unpaid work. “Are you serious?” Huerta ask. “I know Dale Earnhardt Jr isn’t doing appearances for free.”
“The truth is, I don’t really care if I fight in the UFC or somewhere else,” Huerta says. The fighter says he understands that Zuffa has to keep an eye on the bottom line, but he wants to work, “For a company that is as loyal to me as I am to them.”

Wow!Some very insightful things in that discussion such as the Per Diem which I agree is ridiculously low. It will be interesting to see if El Matador feels any repercussions as a result of this little chat.

Rampage Jackson Splits with Juanito Ibarra

Josh Gross at SI.com has a great in depth article up about Rampage and his situation leading up to and immediately after the Forrest Griffin fight. James Irvin Tests Positive

The Nevada State Athletic Commission is reporting that all fighters at the July 19th event tested clean for steroids. However, James Irvin has reportedly tested positive for Methadone and Oxymorphone. They are drugs often used to treat chronic pain.

Irvin now has 20 days to respond and request a formal hearing. If the hearing is upheld he faces a possible fine and suspension.

Tito Ortiz vs. Renato "Babalu" Sobral

Yahoo! Sports is reporting that a Tito Ortiz vs Renato Sobral match up is all but a done deal as the co-main event for the second Affliction show. Babalu mentioned after the Banned card that he would love a fight with Ortiz and now it appears to be close to a reality. Ortiz is known to have a close relationship with Affliction partner Donald Trump and was seen sitting next to him at the inaugural show.

Following Ortiz' last fight in the UFC he had a 60 day non-compete clause in his contract, so we are closing in on the time frame for him to be able to negotiate with other promotions. With the main event of the night probably being the Arlovski vs. Fedor fight, this would definitely add some additional star power. Shaping up to be another good card for Affliction.

Cro Cop vs. Overeem

Alistair Overeem has gone public with his desire to fight Mirko Cro Cop, he actually called him out after a win over Tae Kyun Lee in his DREAM.4 bout.

Cro Cop recently responded in his blog stating:

"I was asked by the members of media if I’m willing to fight Overeem since we challenged me twice already. I watched DREAM 5 and I was happy to see a strong heavyweight match-up on the card, I have no doubts that DREAM will put more match-ups like that in the future. It was a very good performance by Alistair I must say. I’m happy to accept his challenge and I’m looking forward to this fight as I believe that we can deliver an entertaining fight. Now it’s up to DREAM to make this fight happen, I’m ready to face my challenger on the next show already."

I don't know which is worse, the fact that Alistair Overeem is calling people out or that I'm no longer sure who will actually win this bout. Overeem was impressive in his recent win over Mark Hunt at Dream 5 and Cro Cop hasn't exactly shown much recently to get excited about. Could turn out to be a good fight.

Elite XC Broadcast Ratings

The results are in and it's tough to say if the show would be considered a success at this point. TVbythenumbers.com has estimated the final ratings as a 2.0 and approximately 2.5 to 3 million viewers. That's about a 40% decrease from the initial show. While everyone was trying to temper expectations leading up to the event, I can't believe a 40% drop is acceptable to CBS or their advertisers. In my opinion, the show overall was very well done in comparison to the first and spectators we given a true MMA event. However, without the hype that is Kimbo Slice, we saw a dramatic drop in viewer interest.

This would tell me that the October show which Kimbo will probably headline is going to be critical for Elite XC, CBS and the MMA world in general. If the numbers are down again and people start to get the opinion that it was a once and done deal for the majority of spectators, it may be a while before we see MMA on broadcast TV in prime time again. Not to mention the fact that in October they may be battling against college football for the prime audience. When a promotion with limited star power signed on to be the first on broadcast TV, this was the concern many of the hardcore fans were facing. It has taken the UFC years to build the number of stars in it's fold, now Elite XC is in a position where they need to make it happen over night.
